Apple Fitness+ online workout program will change the way you work out at home
Apple launches into the online workout market with Fitness+; a fully integrated program that allows members to use iPhone, iPad, AppleTV or Apple Watch to get fit at home.
A lot of people would attest to the fact that the global coronavirus pandemic has cancelled 2020. But believe it or not, amongst all the negativity, there have been countless positives to come out of this.
Exhibit A: people realising they don’t need to physically go to a gym to stay fit.
This year saw a shift from people paying exxy memberships for access to gyms to simply switching on their phone, tablet or computer and working out in the comfort of their home, with little to no equipment needed. Heck, even Body+Soul jumped on the bandwagon with our free LIVE @ home video series.
With more people adapting to their new workout routines at home, Apple has now entered the online fitness market, launching its own program, Fitness+.
What Apple devices can I use Fitness+ on?
The service integrates with iPhones, iPads and the Apple TV (but only if you have the external Apple TV device), but Apple says it’s especially built for the Apple Watch, and works on the Series 3 model or later. (FYI, Apple has also announced the launch of two NEW watches later this year, the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE…watch this space).
“We’re so excited to energise our customers with new ways to get active and stay active with Apple Watch,” said Jay Blahnik, Apple’s senior director of fitness for Health Technologies.
Do the Fitness+ workouts require equipment?
Most of the workouts require only a simple set of dumbbells – or no equipment at all – which allows for the user to complete a workout wherever and whenever is convenient for them.
“With diverse studio workouts that are suitable for all ability levels, led by a phenomenal group of unique trainers, and an approachable program designed for beginners all the way through to the fitness enthusiast — as well as the flexibility to work out anywhere — there’s something for everyone,” Blahnik added.
How is Fitness+ different to other online workout programs?
One of the key features of Fitness+ is the ability for your workout data to display in an integrated way on-screen, as you follow the workout.
As you move through the class, you’ll be able to see your own, real-time metrics such as your heart rate, activity rings, total calories burned and a timer (because who doesn’t live for that countdown when your on your 19th burpee…?), on the screen of your chosen device.
Fitness+ also utilises intelligent recommendations for your next workout – using your past workout history – so that
How does Fitness+ use music?
Apple’s taken the hassle out of choosing what playlist to listen to while working out, as each workout is accompanied by a customised Apple Music playlist, incorporating a range of music genres – with each track list put together by the trainer, working in collaboration with an Apple Music DJ.
The playlists will be available to all Fitness+ users, regardless if they’re current Apple Music subscribers or not.
The song title and artist’s name will also appear on screen during the workout (so no need to Shazam a track you love), and for Apple Music subscribers each playlist is available to download if you want to take the tunes with you, outside of your workout.
What kinds of workouts can I do with Fitness+?
Fitness+ includes 10 different workout types, including cycling, core, strength, rowing, dance, mindful cool down and HIIT routines.
Over a dozen fresh classes across all workout categories will be added to the program on a weekly basis – including variations on the sweat session’s time frame, trainer and playlist.
What does a Fitness+ membership cost?
Access to Fitness+ will be available to Apple Watch users as a subscription service some time before the end of 2020 for $14.99 per month, or $119.99 per year. No exact dates have been given, as yet.
To help you save some cash, you’ll be able to share your Fitness+ subscription with up to five other people in your family via the Family Sharing feature.
And for those who want to test it out before committing, Apple is also giving everyone a one month FREE trial to the program.
