The North Face X Gucci collab will make you look at hiking in a whole new light
Famed Italian fashion house Gucci has teamed up with iconic outdoor outfitters The North Face for the activewear collaboration we didn’t see coming.
It may be the first week of January, but I’m calling it. The North Face X Gucci collaboration is the most extra athleisure collection of 2021.
Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele has teamed up with iconic outdoors outfitter The North Face for a collaborative capsule collection we certainly didn’t see coming.
Is this a revival of gorpcore, a trend that emerged in 2017 with the rising popularity of traditionally practical or purpose-driven clothing (think back to how everyone was suddenly wearing puffer jackets, bum bags, Teva sandals, tech fleece and Birkenstocks)? Perhaps. As the collection pivots on the practical, made-for-the-great-outdoors items that The North Face is known for. But given the continued popularity for comfort (especially now that we’re all working from home) perhaps gorpcore never went away…?

The cross-category collection includes mens and womens ready-to-wear apparel, shoes, bags, luggage; even fashioning tents and sleeping bags – stepping outside the domain of Gucci’s usually glamorous runway collections.
However, even the most outdoorsy of items are touched with Gucci’s signature styling – carpet-esque floral prints, a retro colour palette and an attention to the finer details proves this collection is as much for the streets of Milan as for the hills of the Himalayas.
The two fashion houses are aligned on reducing their environmental footprint where possible, and this collection is not exception, with pieces of the luggage made using ECONYL®—a nylon fabric sourced from regenerated materials (like fish nets, carpets and other scraps).
