Celebrate Earth Day every day with eco-friendly pleasure tools

Australians use 130kg of plastic per person every year and only 9 percent of that is recycled. But sex brands are embracing environmental responsibility in a big way and we think that is very sexy indeed.   

“How to dispose of sex toys” is a Google search that yields a surprisingly large number of results. More than 24 million, in fact. Mostly made from plastic, of which Aussies use 130kg PER PERSON every year, only nine percent of plastic products are recycled and up to 130,000 tonnes of it will find its way into Australian waterways and the ocean.

As the pressure grows for brands to take sustainability seriously (and not as a hollow marketing buzzword), that sense of responsibility has been embraced by pleasure tool brands and eco-friendly sex is the next big thing to hit the industry.

This week, Womanizer introduced the world’s first eco-friendly, biodegradable, and recyclable pleasure tool using their famed ‘pleasure air technology’; The Premium Eco. It’s made from Biolene, a bioplastic made from renewable raw materials like corn starch.

“With sexual wellness and pleasure becoming more socially accepted and celebrated, the topic of sex toy sustainability is pressing with the development of long-term solutions critical,” Johanna Rief, Head of Sexual Empowerment at Womanizer said.

Eco-conscious couple Jessi and Millie jumped at the opportunity to become ambassadors for The Premium Eco, saying how frustrated they’d been at the lack of eco-friendly pleasure products.

“We have talked about the lack of eco-friendly pleasure products on the market for a long time. We are so proud to partner with Womanizer to launch a high-quality, environmentally friendly product,” they said.

“Self-pleasure is so important, and we are massive advocates for sexual liberation and supporting all people to feel comfortable in their own bodies, so we are really excited that there is a product we feel comfortable in telling people about to explore their pleasure, responsibly.”

Frenchie is another sexual wellness brand embracing the revolution, offering 100 percent vegan, non-toxic, natural, and sustainable materials and ingredients in a range of condoms, lube, even play kits complete with a sexy silk eye mask.

“As a society, we are all becoming more socially aware and there’s a movement towards ensuring we all do our bit. When establishing Frenchie, I wanted to make sure that this was our opportunity to make a difference. “We have made a conscious decision to only manufacture and sell natural rubber latex condoms that, when disposed of correctly (i.e. not flushed), will break down over time in landfill.”

He adds: “The sexual wellness category for a long time has lagged in being eco-conscious and sustainable. In saying this, it’s an exciting time and there’s some ground swirl and a number of startups like us that are taking it to the more established brands with what we’re calling a sexual wellness revolution and a revolution for lovers.”
